Finding water with coat hangers?

Can anyone tell me why if you have two metal coat hangers unfolded in your hands and you cross water... why do the coat hangers cross?

2. It's called "Dowsing" and some people swear by the results. I am a sceptic
3. I honestly don't know why, but it definitely works more often than not. Some professionals use this method. I've used it many times myself to find pipes.
